Sexuality and the contextual Gender Construct

Chuma K. Msindo

I was interested in testing the Queer Theory which states that everyone is born ambivalent or neutral but society shapes their sexuality. I tested this theory through asking people to place themselves on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being heterosexual and 10 being homosexual and explain why they did. My initial thoughts were that people‘s sexuality can be placed on a spectrum but I don't believe it's just due to society. I also feel someone's biological make up may play a role because of the possibility of hormones that are released which contribute to how we are attracted to and form relationships with people.

However, through this experience I’ve come to realize society and our backgrounds play a major role in how we perceive and express our sexuality and how we perceive someone else's sexuality. The different responses to the questions I asked illustrated how people can be set anywhere in the spectrum because of their experiences. However I didn't take into account the sensitive nature of asking people in a public space since there's still a negative stigma towards people who don't subscribe to the norms of society. This could be the reason why some people choose not to place themselves or a possibility of some not telling the complete truth. This still shows me that our perceptions differ, which may be attributed to our experiences in life. In the future I'd like to understand how people's gender expression affects their sexuality.
